The Social Cog is a South Florida based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2012 that helps independently functioning individuals with autism and other developmental and social challenges to make and maintain friendships. We provide our Members the three elements that are essential to this process: an accepting peer group, individualized social coaching/therapy, and shared social and emotional experiences. 

The Social Cog works by bringing independently functioning individuals with autism and other developmental and social challenges together and offering services essential for the formation of lasting relationships. We provide shared social/emotional experiences in the form of fun, interesting monthly outings in the community (i.e. kayaking, bowling, cooking class, etc.) that are designed to allow Members to engage with one another socially and begin to get to know other Members. Each Member is assigned a therapist that acts as a social coach who has training in teaching general social skills along with training specific to our program. Members receive weekly coaching sessions that address obstacles that prevent development of relationships. Our goal is to initially provide our Members with an accepting peer group, and then to teach them to engage with their peers and to manage their developing relationships effectively. 

When a new Member joins The Social Cog, they often report that they have no friends and that repeated failed attempts to make and keep friends has left them feeling hopeless and alone. Within one month of joining the program, most new Members have begun to develop friendships with other Members. Within two months, most new Members are making plans with their new friends. As they progress in the program, their Social Coach helps them learn new social skills and overcome their own personal obstacles. Our Members very often report that their Membership in The Social Cog is life changing, resulting in a vastly expanded social life, increased confidence in all areas of their lives, and improved overall happiness and life satisfaction.
